Marcus Henderson
Marcus “MJ” Henderson Jr. was a Black American veterinary technician from West Baltimore. He had fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, a mild intellectual disability, autism formally diagnosed in adulthood, bipolar I disorder, PTSD, and migraines. His close relationships with his adoptive parents, fiancée, and childhood friends remained central through the recreation-center neglect he experienced in 2014 and the police violence surrounding his 2019 mental health crisis.
Early Life and Family
Marcus was born on June 12, 2003, to Nadira Henderson, who was sixteen. Nadira did not know she was pregnant until late in the pregnancy and had used alcohol while trying to manage untreated bipolar symptoms. Marcus’s prenatal alcohol exposure resulted in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. His family had called him MJ since infancy.
After Nadira died by suicide in 2009, her brother, Marcus Henderson Sr., and his wife, Sharon Henderson, took Marcus in. They completed the legal adoption in 2010, after he turned seven, and added Jr. to his legal name. They raised him in West Baltimore.
Health and Disabilities
Main article: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Reference
Marcus’s FASD affected executive function, working memory, sequencing, emotional regulation, sensory processing, and expressive language. He also had a mild intellectual disability. His receptive language exceeded his expressive language, so unfamiliar people sometimes underestimated what he understood.
Marcus showed persistent autistic traits in childhood, including concrete communication, sensory sensitivities, difficulty with unexpected transitions, and a strong interest in animals. Clinicians initially treated his FASD diagnosis as a sufficient explanation for those traits, delaying further evaluation. Marcus received a formal autism diagnosis in adulthood.
Main article: Bipolar I Disorder Reference
Marcus was diagnosed with bipolar I disorder after his first manic episode in June 2019. He later developed PTSD associated with the police response to that crisis and experienced a severe trigger-related episode the following month. He managed bipolar disorder with medication, therapy, and support from people who understood his communication and executive-function needs.
Marcus also experienced migraines, particularly during periods of intense stress.
Personality and Communication
Marcus was gentle, emotionally open, and attentive to fear or distress in other people and animals. He often apologized reflexively when he needed rest or assistance, a pattern reinforced by years in which adults treated his needs as inconvenience.
Marcus spoke softly and often used shorter, more concrete sentences than his level of comprehension suggested. Under stress, his speech became more halting, and he could have difficulty organizing several feelings or events into a verbal explanation.
Physical Characteristics and Personal Style
Marcus was six feet six inches tall and had a broad, soft build, deep brown skin, round features, large hands, and long eyelashes. His size led unfamiliar adults to read him as older or more threatening than he was, especially during crisis.
He preferred soft clothing and vanilla-sugar lotion that did not aggravate his sensory sensitivities. Sharon and Marcus Sr. taught him grooming routines and provided help when pain, coordination, or sensory overload made a task difficult.
Childhood at the Recreation Center
Marcus attended the West Baltimore Recreation Center with Kevin Williams, Darnell Taylor, Tre Martin, and Jamal Thompson. By summer 2014, volunteers had turned his need for rest into near-total exclusion from activities.
During the Summer 2014 MJ Assault Crisis, senior volunteer Shanice grabbed and shook Marcus while he slept, leaving bruises. Kelsey Morrison witnessed the assault and supported the advocacy Marcus’s friends had already attempted. The aftermath forced the center to address its treatment of him.
June 2019 Mental Health Crisis
Main article: June 2019 Police Violence Incident - Event
On June 15, 2019, Marcus experienced a manic episode and climbed onto a West Baltimore rooftop while carrying a knife. His four closest friends arrived first, began calming him, and persuaded him to drop the knife before police arrived. Although Marcus was unarmed by the time officers reached the scene, they separated the friends from him and escalated the crisis; Officer Rodriguez also pointed a weapon at Kevin.
Lieutenant Nathan Weston recognized the psychiatric crisis, lowered the immediate threat, spoke with Marcus on the roof, and remained with him through transport. Marcus was hospitalized, diagnosed with bipolar I disorder, and began treatment. The recorded encounter later circulated widely.
Education and Career
Marcus trained as a veterinary technician and worked at a West Baltimore veterinary clinic. He was particularly attentive to frightened animals and to families facing end-of-life decisions. His patience allowed him to work without forcing contact when an animal needed time to approach.

Kevin, Darnell, Tre, and Jamal had been Marcus’s friends since childhood, with the five-person group together by circa 2007–2008. They advocated for him at the recreation center, tried to help during his 2019 crisis, and remained closely connected as adults.
